A Dental office in Manhattan Answers Common Questions About Dentistry

In our dental office in Manhattan, we take the time to get to know our patients, learn about their goals and what concerns they have regarding their health. We believe that these conversations are important because an informed patient can take charge of their oral health care and is likely to remain healthier in between dental appointments. During these conversations, we often hear the same questions, and there are definitely some common misconceptions about dentistry that we would like to clear up here.

These are a few of the questions we are asked on a regular basis.

Can a cosmetic dentist fix my tooth if it’s infected?

Yes, some patients make the mistake of thinking that a cosmetic dentist only works on the appearance of teeth. In reality, a cosmetic dentist can keep teeth clean and healthy and treat them if they become infected. This includes treating cavities, performing root canals, and deep cleaning gums. The main advantage to patients is that if a restoration needs to be done, a cosmetic dentist can do so and make it look seamless.

Will my crown last forever?

No, if you have any type of restoration including a dental veneer or dental crown, it may last for a decade or longer but is not designed to last forever. When you consider that natural teeth only last for a set period of time, this makes sense. Over time, a restoration can wear out just like a natural tooth can, and it can become damaged in an accident as well. At our dental office in Manhattan, we remind patients of how important it is to brush and floss regularly, eat a healthy diet and have their teeth cleaned. By keeping the teeth around the restoration healthy, you increase the lifespan of the restoration as well. Simultaneously, if you grind your teeth at night, you should wear a night guard to prevent further damage.

Why do dentists give different opinions?

A dentist, just like any medical professional, will develop opinions and preferred treatment options based on experience. In dentistry, there are typically multiple ways to correct the same problem so you may get different recommendations based on the provider that you visit. With that in mind, it is important to select a treatment option and dentist that you are comfortable with.

Will my teeth stay sensitive forever?

If you have sensitive teeth due to erosion, you don’t have to continue living with them. At our dental office in Manhattan, we treat sensitive teeth and can help to protect them using either dental crowns or a bonding procedure. This will seal in the exposed dentin so that your teeth will no longer be as sensitive, and you can live life in comfort.

Our goal is for our patients to have excellent oral health and to live a full life that is unrestricted by issues with their teeth. If you have general questions or want to learn about particular treatments, schedule a dental exam, and we will be happy to answer all of your questions.
